Human Origins Patrimony in Southeast Asia

Alfred Pawlik

Associate Professor
alfred.pawlik@upd.edu.ph

Research Interest:
Being a graduate of the Tübingen Institute of Palaeohistory in Germany, my area of research includes the Archaeology of hunters and gatherers and the expansion of early and modern hominins in Europe and Asia. I am especially interested in the development and reconstruction of prehistoric technology and human behaviour, the development of stone tool technology and the identification of tool use and function with optical and electron microscopy and X-ray microprobes. Triggered by several academic cooperations with universities in Asia and a number of visiting professorships, I developed a keen interest in Southeast Asian Prehistory. Especially, the earliest expansion of archaic and modern hominids into Island Southeast Asia and searching for traces of early modern hominin behaviour is in the focus of my research. Currently, I am a project leader of the multi-disciplinary project “Palaeoenviromental and Biodiversity study of Mindoro Island: An Archaeological Science Initiative”, supported by an EIDR Research Grant of the University of the Philippines and chief investigator of the field project “In Search of the Earliest Human Colonists of the Philippine Archipelago. Surveys and Excavations on Ilin Island, Mindoro Occidental”, supported by the National Geographic Global Exploration Fund.

Maintaining an academic interaction between the Prehistory of SE-Asia and Europe, I am actively participating in several research projects in Europe. With regards to the development of international academic links of the Archaeological Studies Program, I am coordinating partnerships with archaeological institutes in Europe as well as exchange programs within Erasmus Mundus. Aside from my work in Southeast Asia and Europe, I have conducted fieldwork and research in Oman, Jemen, Turkey and Egypt.

Area of Specialization:
Prehistoric Technology, Microwear and residue analysis, Palaeolithic of Europe and Southeast-Asia, Geoarchaeology
